Statement Tights—and Socks!—Were the Real MVP of NYFW
New York Fashion Week’s fall 2025 shows officially end tomorrow. The street-style set has been dressed in their best attire for the entire week: lots of peacocking. Vogue Phil Oh has documented the best statement ensembles both inside and outside the shows to capture how VIPs dress for snow and slush with style. Artful layering, great coats, and other fashion staples are everywhere. But tights and socks have emerged as the true fashion MVP.
The accessories this week have taken the street-style outfits of the set from good to great. A bright teal-coloured tight with an animal-print jacket? Fun! What if you wore an orange coat with argyle leggings? Fresh! Tights and socks are not only useful for keeping people warm but also add a touch of personality to winter outfits.
New York Fashion Week labels also got in on the act, wearing bold hosiery. Sandy Liang wore polka-dotted tights under frilly skirts, while Anna Sui combined striped knee socks and striped knit miniskirts. This is a trend (pun intended) when the runways, as well as the crowds attending the shows, adopt the look. It’s time to let go of the notion that tights and socks are only for practical purposes.
Even if you didn’t attend NYFW this year, you could still add some fun tights to your winter wardrobe. Why wear classic black or opaque tights when you can create an outfit that features a bold print or colour? A street-style photographer may approach you to take a picture. At least one can fantasize.
